Louis was born on August 19, 1926 and passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2008 and is survived by his wife Bobbie.
He graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1944 and from North Carolina State University in 1950.
He enlisted in the US Marines in 1944 and saw action in the Pacific theater in World War II. He served in the Army for over 20 years and retired as a Major. During his service in the Korean War he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star among other decorations.

Henry Gerard Hartzog III, MD, passed away unexpectedly at home on June 15, 2007, the day after his 49th wedding anniversary.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Gerry was born in Greenwood, SC, December 6, 1935, the son of Henry Gerard Hartzog, Jr. and Grace McCord Hartzog.
In addition to his loving wife, Joy Lambert, Gerry is survived by four children, Valerie Hartzog Thorn, and her children, Christin Mary, Jennifer Grace, and John David of Raleigh; Sharon Hartzog Craig and her husband, Brian of Corpus Christi, TX; Mary Hunter Hartzog Bozymski and her husband, Mark, and their two children, Sarah Hunter and Abigail Simon of Chapel Hill; and Henry Gerard Hartzog IV "Chip" and his wife, Holly, and their two children, Elizabeth Haddon and Margaret May of Raleigh. Gerry is also survived by a brother, Dan McCord Hartzog and his wife, Tricia of Raleigh; and a sister Ann Hartzog Hall of Black Mountain, NC; sister-in-law, Ann Thomas Lambert of Williamsburg, VA; and many nieces and nephews. 1955

Alexander Ross Moore, 70, of Meadowview Place, Lenoir, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Saturday, February 23, 2008 at his residence.
Mr. Moore was born April 26, 1937 in Wake County to the late John Moffett Moore and Alton Fleming Moore. He was a graduate of Needham Broughton class of 1955 and a graduate of NC State in 1961 and a member of Hudson United Methodist Church.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Emily Steele Moore of the home; his daughters, Laura Emily Moore of Fallon NV, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Robinson of Kernersville and Katherine Ann Waters of Hudson; his brothers, Edwin Moore of Raleigh and John Moore of Wilmington; and five grandchildren.

Fred Autry Olive, Sr., 69, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at his home.
He was born in Johnston County to Leo T. and Louise Goodwin Olive. Fred was a U.S. Custom Inspector with the federal government for 32 years. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jimmy Olive and his first wife Shirley.
He is survived by his wife, Keda Harvell Olive; son, Fred Autry Olive, Jr. and his wife, Bibi of Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Vickie Clinehens and her husband, Neal of Stafford, VA; brother, Leo Travis Olive, Jr. and his wife, Pat of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, LuNeta Vaughan and her husband, William of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jennifer and Christopher of Stafford, VA; Nicole, Nick and Victoria of Chesapeake, VA.

She is survived by her husband of almost forty-two years, Denny L. Turner; two sons, Jonathan and his wife Laura of Concord, Joel and his wife Lisa, of Loganville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Corey, Cadee, Carrie and Ashlyn; a brother, Eric Dean and his wife Betsy.

A Note from The Virtual Wall
Three men from VMO-6 died on 14 November 1966 when their UH-1E (BuNo 151873) was shot down while conducting a strafing run:
* Capt Leon G. Chadwick, Raleigh, NC, pilot (Silver Star)
* Sgt Daniel M. Bennett, Boynton Beach, FL, aircrewman
* Cpl Rodolfo M. Gonzalez, Harlingen, TX, aircrewman
Captain Chadwick was awarded a posthumous Silver Star for an action two weeks earlier, on 31 October 1966.
Gordon was a true friend to so many of us. I wish he had made it home.

Walter Bradley Cummings, 67, husband of Kay Vaughan Cummings, died Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Longwood Park in Clarksville. Native to Ithaca, NY, Walt was a graduate of North Carolina State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 until 1965. He made his career in the pharmaceutical industry and retired as Vice-President of Research/Development with Warner Lambert- Parke Davis. Walt has owned property in Clarksville for over 25 years, and relocated to Clarksville in 1997. In addition to being a sailing enthusiast Walt enjoyed the game of golf; and he greatly enjoyed his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Kay, of 46 years, Walt is survived by his son Mike Cummings and his wife Angela of Raleigh, NC; his daughter, Shannon Keesling and her husband Mark of Cary, NC; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. His brothers, Ralph W. Cummings of Gainsville and William Kenneth Cummings of Alexandria; and sister, Mary Ann Hardee of Fayetteville, NC also survive.

BURLINGTON ? Mr. Dahmer L. ?D.L.? Smith, 67, of 2157 S. Gurney Street, died Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 8 a.m. in his home after several years of declining health and four months critical illness.
He retired after serving 35 years with the Burlington Police Department and the Burlington Fire Department. He was a member of the Burlington Police Club and was a member of the Softball Hall of Fame.
In addition to his wife, Evelyn, of the home, he is survived by his son, Michael David Smith, of the home; his mother-in-law, Eunice Horton, of Smithfield; his sister-in-law, Louise Horton Barber and her husband, Jerry, of Princeton; his brothers-in-law, G.B. Horton and his wife, Pat, of Louisburg, Dr. James Horton and his wife, Gloria, of Edenton, Charles Horton and his wife, Teresa, of Louisburg; and six nieces and nephews.

Mitchell Winfield Stoutt, age 67, of Youngsville, died on Friday, November 10, 2007 at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Wake County, he was born on June 30, 1940 to the late John Russell and Gertrude Mangum Stoutt. He served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Professionally, Mitchell was an electrical estimator. He was elected Chairman of the Electrical Examiner's Board, for which he served more than ten years. A member of the William G. Hill Lodge #218, Mitchell served his community as a Mason and Shriner. He was an avid golfer.
Surviving are his wife of forty- seven years, Linda Parker Stoutt, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell A. and Carolyn Stoutt of Selma; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Frederick Seymour of Raleigh; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and William Holt of Wake Forest. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Kelsey, Kathryn, Alexa, Peyton, Nicholos and Caitlin.

Carroll King, whose Raleigh High School basketball teams won three consecutive state championships, recently died in Kerrville, Texas, where he had lived in retirement since 1990. King. 90, coached for 13 seasons, and his teams won state titles in 1952,'53, and '54. His Raleigh teams were runners-up in 1951 and 1956.
He was later the Raleigh City Schools athletic director and was the director of student services at Ravenscroft High School.
"He was a great coach," said Rex McMillan, who played for King. "He really cared about people, and he knew how to motivate people. He was one of a kind."

Elizabeth "Betty" Smaltz
Elizabeth (Betty) Smaltz passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, NC.
She was born Elizabeth Ann Rank on November 18, 1919 in Frostburg, Maryland to the late Helen and Philip Rank. She was married to William R. Smaltz, Sr. for 59 years, who predeceased her on September 14, 2001.
Betty graduated from Penn State University. She taught physical education in Pennsylvania, in the Raleigh City Schools, and was the first female physical education teacher at N.C. State University. She loved gardening. Her yard at Wrightsville Beach was the first oceanfront property ever on the Azalea Tour for Wilmington.
